I recently came across an article by my favorite columnist for Slate magazine, an online news magazine I devour during my downtime on the rig. The columnist, Emily Yoffe, visited a deepwater oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico very similar to my own for a day and chronicled it in the following link:
"Rigtime Gal"
I would highly recommend it, for it provides the point of view of someone with no prior experience or training in the oilfield. The past 14 months I have spent working here have robbed me of the fresh eye of a newcomer, and I do not doubt that she will provide some interesting insights that I might not have thought to mention.
The world changes quickly, however. Despite what she describes in the article (circa 2007), fishing is no longer allowed on offshore rigs as a standard rule. One thing that apparently has not changed however, is the food. We even keep to the same schedule!
