It's always greener on the other side...

Deepwater rigs are known for their higher tier amenities. Everyone wants a deepwater job because of the better food, nicer rooms, etc. etc. They have gyms, saunas, TV sets everywhere, and I have heard some described as "a cruise ship with an oil derrick on top".

The rig I'm currently on, although slightly old (and reputedly haunted!!), is a good example of a typical deepwater rig. I wouldn't set foot in the sauna if you paid me (you have to go through the men's locker room to get there and then put up a sign to let them know there's a woman present), but I enjoy various other aspects, like....

THE VEGETABLES!

There's a variety! I no longer lose track of how many meals it's been since I HAVEN'T eaten collard greens! (Current count on this rig: I've only had it once. ONCE!). There's a full salad bar stocked full of all sorts of salad items, as well as more types of fruits than I typically eat in a month! And one of the most striking differences between this rig and my previous rig: The cooked vegetables have never once tasted like meat. I still worry that my perception of brussel sprouts has been permanently skewed due to my gustatory memories of my last job.

I'm eating more healthfully here than I have since.... I can remember. My recent week off put that in true perspective, when I noticed that the only vegetables I ate at home were the fresh jalapeno peppers I threw on top of my nachos. I bought a bag of apples that I did not open. Let's just assume I ate plenty of veggies every time I ate out. Yes. That's what happened. I'm sure.
